Canadian Ammonites 101
In Alberta, Canada, the geological landscape holds a treasure trove of ancient marine history, where Ammonites thrived millions of years ago. It’s captivating to delve into the mysteries of the prehistoric seas that once covered the Bearpaw Formation, the exclusive home of iridescent Ammonites.
At Iniskim, our goal is to shine a light on the beauty and significance of Canadian Ammonites, not just within our industries but also for everyone to appreciate. Through our outreach efforts, we’ve been sharing insights about the remarkable importance of Canadian Ammonites with our followers.
Our mission is to bring together a community of enthusiasts who share a passion for these remarkable fossils – from the various specimens of Placenticeras costatum to Placenticeras meeki, each specimen boasts its own unique charm. Among them, Placenticeras intercalare stands out with its distinctive ‘horns,’ following the natural spiral of the Ammonite.
Together, we aim to highlight the unmatched beauty and quality of our gem-grade Ammonites, adding a splash of their unique colors and allure to the world.
We also recognize the vital role that museums like the Royal Tyrrell Museum in Drumheller, Alberta, Canada, play in championing the study of Canadian Ammonites. Working alongside an esteemed institution such as Royal Tyrrell adds a touch of prestige, inviting visitors to embark on an immersive journey through Canada’s prehistoric wonders. It signifies that experts recognize the value of Ammonite specimens for their scientific, historical, or cultural significance.
When an Ammonite is displayed in a museum, it shows:
- Scientific significance
- Educational value
- Cultural and historical importance
- Preservation and conservation
- Contribution to scientific research
While museums around the world often feature a variety of Ammonite specimens, the distinctive qualities of Canadian Ammonites remain largely unknown within our communities and industries. Yet, these fossils hold significant value as indicators of geological evolution and biodiversity. Additionally, the remarkable transformation of our fossilized Ammonite shells into exquisite gem-quality Ammolite gemstones highlights the inherent beauty and market potential of Canadian Ammonites.

Nestled in the heart of Alberta’s Badlands, the Royal Tyrrell Museum is renowned for its remarkable collection of dinosaur fossils. However, its Ammonite exhibits are equally awe-inspiring. One standout discovery is the ‘Placenticeras meeki,’ a large, intricately preserved specimen found in the province’s ancient seabeds. This ammonite provides invaluable insights into the marine ecosystems that thrived millions of years ago, captivating visitors with its timeless beauty.
There’s a growing interest in Canadian Ammonites in countries where institutions and collectors alike recognize their importance in understanding global prehistory.
Smithsonian National Museum of National History in Washington, D.C, United States
At the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C., it boasts the National Fossil collection which is an assembly of more than 40 million specimens. Part of this storied fossil collection features a plaster-bound skeleton of a giant, Mesozoic marine-reptile called a Mosasaur, a predator for Ammonites.
This display resides in the Museum’s Deep Time fossil hall, where many of the Ammonites and other specimens were acquired over decades by paleontologist Bill Cobban. He discovered many of the marine fossils from the vanished Western Interior Seaway, including the iridescent, gem-quality Ammonites that are only found in the Bearpaw Formation.
The world-class collection has held scientific importance as it has helped shape our understanding of the geological history of North America.
The Natural History Museum, London, UK
A similar example of this is at The Natural History Museum, London, UK. It is home to one of the world’s most extensive collections of fossils, and showcases a diverse array of ammonite specimens. Among its treasures is the iconic ‘Dactylioceras commune,’ a species known for its intricate spiral patterns and delicate beauty.
Discovered in the Jurassic Coast of England, this specimen serves as a testament to the museum’s commitment to preserving Earth’s natural heritage.
In addition to the notable museums above, we’d like to highlight many of the other museums that feature Canadian Ammonites in their bespoke collection. This includes the Museum of Gem and Jewellery Museum in Jaipur, India; the American Museum of Natural History in New York, United States; the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, Canada; the Galt Museum in Lethbridge, Canada; and Glenbow Museum in Calgary, Canada.
